Shopify are deprecating the checkout.liquid
file which many Shopify Plus clients use to show the "Been referred by a friend?" link. Furthermore, Shopify are upgrading the post purchase page which will change how your Mention Me integration works.
Shopify call this their "Checkout Extensibility" upgrade.
This article explains how to ensure a smooth migration from checkout.liquid
for the Mention Me integration.
Terminology
In this article we'll refer to several sections:
- The "product" page - i.e. where someone might add an item to their basket
- The "cart" or "basket" page - i.e. where someone can see what items are in their basket
- The "checkout" page - i.e. the page where a customer enters their credit card details
- The "order confirmation" page - i.e. where someone sees confirmation their purchase has been made.
We will also refer to the "sidecart" which is normally a small version of the cart page shown dynamically throughout the website. It might appear as a drawer or slideout on the page, or a popup.
Affected pages
The Shopify upgrade will affect all Shopify customers in two stages.
In August 2024, the checkout page will change. This will affect the "Been referred by a friend?" link.
In August 2025, the order confirmation page will change. This will affect the "Refer a friend" popup.
The remaining pages (product, cart and sidecart) are not affected and can continue to use the existing integration. For these pages you can continue to use the integration instructions in our Shopify Integration pages.
Mention Me App
In order to display the Mention Me journey in your checkout, Mention Me have built an app.
The app will:
- Include the "Been referred by a friend?" link in the Checkout
- Show the "Refer a friend" journey in your order confirmation
- Allow you to customise the placement and location of these two experiences
- Automatically add all the tracking Mention Me requires on the Order Confirmation page
Installing the app
This app is currently going through review with Shopify and unfortunately we do not know how long this process will take.
Until this process is complete, we can install the app on a store for you.

Alternatives
In the absence of using the "Been referred by a friend?" link on your checkout page, we also recommend doing the following:
- Ensuring that the "Been referred by a friend?" link is included on your cart page
- And that it is included on your sidecart (or equivalent component).
