Shopify are deprecating the
checkout.liquid file which many Shopify Plus clients use to show the "Been referred by a friend?" link.
This upgrade of the checkout for Shopify customers will come into effect in August 2024, but you can opt in before that.
This article explains how to ensure a smooth migration from
checkout.liquid for the Mention Me integration.
In this article we'll refer to several sections:
- The "product" page - i.e. where someone might add an item to their basket
- The "cart" or "basket" page - i.e. where someone can see what items are in their basket
- The "checkout" page - i.e. the page where a customer enters their credit card details
- The "order confirmation" page - i.e. where someone sees confirmation their purchase has been made.
We will also refer to the "sidecart" which is normally a small version of the cart page shown dynamically throughout the website. It might appear as a drawer or slideout on the page, or a popup.
The only part of the Mention Me integration affected by the
checkout.liquid removal is the checkout page.
The remaining pages (product, cart, sidecart and order confirmation) are not affected and can continue to use the existing integration. For these pages you can continue to use the integration instructions in our Shopify Integration pages.
checkout.liquid file will be replaced by "Checkout Extensions" and is the only page affected.
Limitations of Checkout Extensions
Unfortunately, due to the way Shopify have built and designed Checkout Extensions only Shopify Partners or the developers who run a Shopify site can build an app that shows the "Been referred by a friend?" in their checkout.
Mention Me are currently not a Shopify Partner, and at this time we cannot provide an app to allow you to use the "Been referred by a friend?" link on your checkout page.
We are considering providing formal instructions and guidance for customers to build their own app, but we don't have a timeframe for this yet.
If you would like advice on doing this yourself, please reach out to our support team at firstname.lastname@example.org who will be able to assist you.
In the absence of using the "Been referred by a friend?" link on your checkout page, we strongly advise doing the following:
- We recommend ensuring that the "Been referred by a friend?" link is included on your cart page
- And that it is included on your sidecart (or equivalent component).
You can follow the instructions on the Shopify: The Referee Tag integration instructions for adding these.
A number of our clients have implemented this approach, and have seen no impact on the success of referrals.
In a small number of cases we have seen a positive uplift in referrals as a result of being able to find the name search journey earlier in the checkout journey.
For this reason, we see no reason for customers to delay the move from
checkout.liquid until the mandatory switch over in August 2024.
