In this guide, you'll learn how to set up and run referral experiments in the Mention Me platform by understanding the three key layers that shape what your customers see: Campaigns, Experiments, and Offers.
You'll learn how to:
- Use Campaigns to target specific customer segments and serve relevant referral journeys
- Run Experiments to test different combinations of messaging, design, rewards, and offers to see what resonates best with your audience
- Create and edit Offers, which control the full visual and content experience of the referral journey
- Choose and launch the next experiment from a recommended list—either using a winning offer as a template or starting from scratch
- Allocate traffic between offers, and prepare your experiment to go live
- Manage copy, design, and reward settings before launching, including instructions for submitting voucher uploads
By the end, you'll be able to confidently create, test, and optimise your referral offers—helping to boost customer engagement and drive better performance from your programme.
The Mention Me platform structures your referral setup into three key layers:
-
Campaign (Top Layer)
Defines who sees your referral offer based on targeting criteria.
Example: Show one campaign to all customers, or test multiple offers for different segments. -
Experiments (Middle Layer)
Used to test what resonates best with customers. You can experiment with various elements of your referral setup to optimise performance and sharing. -
Offers (Bottom Layer)
This is what the customer actually sees, including design, copy, and the referral reward. Each offer is independent—changes to one don’t affect others.
Running a New Experiment
When your current offer reaches statistical significance—or if you want to launch a new one—you can start a new experiment by selecting a template via Roadmap.
1. Navigate to Roadmap
- Click the ? icon for descriptions of each preset experiment type.
- Experiments are listed in the order we recommend running them.
2. Choose & Set Up Your New Experiment
- Click the 3 dots next to the experiment.
- Choose one of the following setup templates:
a. Use an existing offer (typically the winning one): Copies all Offer Settings, Copy, Imagery, and Rewards.
b. Create default: Starts a blank offer you can fully customise.
3. Edit the Draft Offer
- Click the experiment name or the 3 dots to open offer settings.
You can now customise:
- Copy – Messaging and text shown to users
- Design – Imagery and layout
- Rewards – Type and value of referral rewards
- Vouchers - Given to your users after being introduced or for a successful referral
4. Launch Your Experiment
- You now have two offers within the experiment and are ready to go live.
Traffic Allocation
By default, traffic is automatically allocated to both offers once the experiment is live.
Want a 50/50 split?
- Untick the auto-allocate box or let us know in your live request.
- Duplicate the control offer and re-push live if needed.
You're ready to go!
Congratulations on setting up your first experiment! 🚀
Your Onboarding Manager will be on hand to assist with setting these during the onboarding process; the above is a guide once you are fully onboarded.
