Mention Me’s unique name sharing feature encourages natural word-of-mouth referrals by letting customers refer friends using just their name at check-out. On average, 34% of new customers are delivered this way.
Name sharing requires you to pass us first and last names through tags or for referrers to manually register their name. It can only be used via the referee tag ('Been referred by a friend?' link in the checkout/homepage, etc).
Step 1: Click the 'Been referred by a friend?' link on the checkout page.
This will launch a layover screen prompting the user to enter the name of the person who referred them.
Step 2: The customer can then enter the name of the person who referred them.
If there are multiple people with that name in our database, we’ll prompt them to enter the referrer’s email address. If the email address is a match, we’ll link the new customer to that referrer and give their reward on their first purchase.
If a referee makes a purchase without enter their referral details, you’ll need to retrospectively link their accounts. Learn more about linking accounts here.
Reasons a referrer's name may not match
- People's names change (i.e. from maiden to married name)
- Not all names are just two words (i.e. Asian names commonly only have one word)
- People often have nicknames.
If a referee enters a referrer's name that isn't in our records, we do our best to match them by looking for a similar name in the database and checking it's them.

Things to note when it comes to name sharing
- We treat international names like Western names, and can handle non-Latin characters
- We can only work off names registered with us. You can update customers’ names if required
- We ignore cases
- We remove titles from names (Mr, Mrs) if the referee adds them, but specific titles (like Captain) will affect the search.
How searching for a name works
There are three possible outcomes when a customer searches for a name:
- It’s an exact match
- It’s a duplicate match. If we find multiple people with the same name, we’ll ask the referee to confirm the referrer's email address. By default, we’ll give the code even if the email addresses don’t match (we’ll also email the referrer to check if they registered with a different email address). You can disable this option if preferred
- It’s not a match. If nobody in the system matches the search, we’ll ask for the email address. We’ll only give the coupon code if this is an exact match.
