The following guide covers some commonly asked FAQs about the Shopify App.
Do I need to be on Shopify Plus to use the Mention Me Shopify App?
You can use the Post Purchase extension (which is used for referral promotion) without Shopify Plus.
The "Been referred by a friend?" experience cannot be added to the Shopify Checkout without Shopify Plus. If you are not a Shopify Plus client, we'd recommend using our standard Referee Integration on a page earlier in your checkout, such as a Cart page or if you have one in a "Slide out" cart.
Can we use Shopify Web Pixels alongside or instead of the App?
Shopify Web Pixels cannot be used to display any UI to the customer. They can only be used to send analytics events to 3rd parties. UI such as the "Been referred by a friend?" experience pre-purchase, or the referral promotion post purchase cannot be added using Web Pixels.
You could theoretically use the Shopify Web Pixels for order tracking, but you cannot use it for promotion.
As promoting at the point of delight (i.e. post purchase) is the most important promotion point, you should instead use the Mention Me Shopify App to promote referral.
Can I install the App even if we've not upgraded to Checkout Extensions?
Yes! You can install the app and configure it even if you've not upgraded yet. The app won't do anything until you go live with the Checkout Extensibility functionality in Shopify.
If you've only upgraded the Checkout (and not yet got plans to upgrade Post Purchase), you can still use the app. You can configure it for all parts of the Checkout and Post Purchase, but it will not run until you switch on Checkout Extensibility.
You must keep the Referrer tag in additional scripts until you upgrade Checkout Extensibility on your Post Purchase page.
Can the Referrer Journey open with a popup like it used to before the Checkout Upgrade?
No. At Mention Me, we would strongly prefer it opened with a popup automatically. We believe this gives you the best chance of converting customers into referrers at the point of delight. We have seen in our A/B testing that this is more powerful.
Unfortunately, Shopify have decided that popups are not allowed unless a user clicks on a button or link first.
We would recommend that you raise this with your Shopify account manager - we hope that enough people providing the feedback will persuade them otherwise.
Why doesn't the "Been referred by a friend?" link appear next to both Discount Code boxes on mobile?
[As of October 14th 2024, this issue no longer occurs. If your store was setup before then, you may need to remove and re-add the App Block on your Checkout page]
If you're using the "One-page Checkout", Shopify renders two Discount Code boxes. One behind an "Order summary" accordion at the top of the page:
And one nearer the bottom of the page underneath the payment settings:
Shopify have decided that they will only render the "Been referred by a friend?" link next to the second discount code box.
This is a decision taken due to vertical space limitations and is documented on their public code. They also note that all users must scroll down past the second box to pay eventually.
The workaround we would recommend in the meantime is to switch to a "Three-page Checkout" where this issue does not occur.
Does the Shopify App support pages outside of the Checkout Extensibility pages?
The Mention Me Shopify App does not support pages outside of Checkout Extensibility, e.g. Landing Pages or adding the Referee journey earlier in your checkout journey like in your side cart.
For these, we'd recommend using our standard Mention Me Tag integration which you can learn more about in our standard Shopify: Getting Started guide.
Does the Shopify App support B2B orders?
The Mention Me Shopify App is disabled for B2B orders. If you'd like to change this behaviour, please let us know and we'll gladly work with you on your use case. Contact us at support@mention-me.com.
